6. YODSANKLAI FAIRTEX

His ability to dissect opponents with calculated precision has made him a modern Muay Thai legend. He retired in 2021.

5. NAMSAKNOI YUDTHAGARNGAMTORN

Namsaknoi Yudthagarngamtorn, from a small fishing village in the South of Thailand, followed his older brother in the sport, and began fighting in Bangkok at 13 years of age. Namsaknoi’s fighting style was generally technical, but he was able to switch to strong in the knees style, depending on the opponent. In an interview with Siam Fight Mag, he said his toughest bout was against Attachai Fairtex – which resulted in a draw. He invested his life savings into his own gym on the island of Koh Pha Ngan – Namnsaknoi Muay Thai Club, but sadly it is now closed. He is still teaching, however.

4. DIESELNOI CHOR THANASUKARN

Dieselnoi Chor Thanasukarn, often regarded as the greatest clinch fighter in Muay Thai history, was a dominant force in the sport. He was “born on a boat”, as he would say, because his family moved along the river in Thailand selling coal to passing ships. He had the option of becoming a monk, but chose the more aggressive path. Dieselnoi’s clinch work and knee strikes were virtually unstoppable. His nickname, after all, was “Sky-Piercing Knee”. Dieselnoi is uniquely tall, at 6’2”, while being relatively light, which allowed for speed and reach. A master of the sport, he was champion for long stretches at a time, as he no longer had any opponents to fight. He retired rather young, and eventually did become a monk for a few years, but is now teaching muay thai.

He typically frustrated his opponents as his movements made it nearly impossible to land clean strikes. Interestingly, after his fighting career, he was also an entertainer and actor. He now runs a gym in Bangkok.

He started fighting professionally at an incredible 8 years of age.  He won the prestigious K-1 World MAX Championship in Japan and was named Lumpinee Stadium Fighter of the Year in 2002 and 2008. Buakaw’s powerful kicks and aggressive style have earned him a global fan base and solidified his place among the all-time greats. Some consider Buakaw the best kickboxer out of Thailand of all time. Like Samart, Buakaw also got into acting, appearing in several tv shows and movies. Buakaw is considered an ambassador of the sport, having brought Muay Thai to a truly global audience.
